Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world today. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
